Hyperspring improves reliability and reduces cost of MRI Docking Station
Application: MRI Docking Station for Mobile Bed
In the past, this customer had used non-magnetic coaxial contacts to connect the 16 channels of MRI signals between the mobile bed and the main MRI system. Due to the high price pressure in the MRI market, the customer was looking for a cost efficient solution, with the same or better performance.
Solution: Hyperspring RF Grid
The Smiths Interconnect Engineering team used its experience in spring probe contacts and RF engineering, developing a pin grid array based solution, replacing the existing expensive coaxial contacts with specially arranged non-magnetic Hyperspring interposer contacts. This connector solution also meets the extreme requirement of 60,000 mating cycles during the life of the MRI-system, as well as excellent vibration and shock performance.
The new solution was designed to improve reliability by eliminating the risk of bent pins and to significantly reduce cost. The design was adapted to the customer’s existing frame so only minor changes to the system were required.
The cost reduction was a big contribution to the cost effectiveness of the whole MRI system.
Smiths’ extensive experience in spring contacts (Hyperspring, spring probe) was the basis for success, along with the Pin Grid Array technology. The Smiths team worked in close contact with the customer’s team to develop the right solution which improves both reliability and cost. This new design from Smiths Interconnect makes the customer more successful in medical markets all over the world.
