Overview

The  SpaceNXT™ HC Series is tested to meet the space orbit environmental criteria and is offered in a high volume solution that leverage the Smiths Interconnect space heritage to improve reliability and performance over a QPL or COTS product.

The Smiths Interconnect’s patented Thermopad® attenuator is a totally passive, surface mountable temperature variable attenuator that compensates for gain-variation over temperature. It requires no bias or control voltages and does not generate distortion.

SpaceNXT™ HC Thermopad® is a cost effective series that can be purchased from the standard product price list without additional charges for flight testing.  It offers 100% flight product testing to Group A for mission assurance.  Options for group B and C testing are also available to further and completely qualify the product batch.

SpaceNXT™ is an initiative recently introduced by Smiths Interconnect that entails the creation of a full range of higher reliability products for next generation space applications that are readily available to the market. The SpaceNXT™ product portfolio provides our customers a combination of highly reliable technology and lower cost of ownership.

Optical Interconnect Design Challenges in Space

Aeronautical applications face many design challenges that are unique to their intended environment. The best practices for optical interconnect design for space applications include the use of radiation-resistant technology to defend against space radiation, the use of components and devices that are designed to operate in harsh environments, and meeting size, weight, and power (SWaP) and long-term reliability requirements. Finally, it is recommended to follow open standards like VPX and to look for solutions that comply with MIL and quality standards.
