Ferrite Isolators and Circulators for SSPA Applications

Overview

Solid state power amplifiers (SSPA) have been with us for decades. With each new generation of transistors and FETs SSPAs have extended their effective operating frequency and bandwidth, RF power and efficiency. As the years and technology have progressed, ferrite isolators, and in some cases circulators, have continued to provide a cost-effective solution to buffer the gain stages and protect the SSPA from reflected power.

SSPA are now ubiquitous, operating reliably under the severest of conditions and environments, including the hard vacuum of space.

SSPA development is also accelerating in terms of the operating frequencies. It feels like each month a new chip set is launched that offers greater power and an ability to operate at higher frequency applications to the extent that they able to match that which can be delivered by TWTAs.

As SSPAs become more capable, they are also becoming smaller, more affordable and from an isolator supplier's point of view, an increasing challenging due to the environment in which an isolator has to fit and operate., The job of the isolator supplier is to keep pace with the SSPA designer and provide a solution to an increasingly demanding set of requirements.

The objective of this webinar is to share with the participant some of the challenges, design process and development path from the perspective of the isolator supplier.

Key Takeaways

  • Explore capabilities, benefits and added value when using an isolator on the output of an SSPA
  • Learn technical challenges that you might face as isolator designers to ensure product success
  • Understand the future of the SSPA isolator market
